Canadian Breeding and Re-Introduction Programs

We work with animals whose natural habitat is close to us in Langley, British Columbia. Today, this comprises the Vancouver Island Marmot Program, the Oregon Spotted Frog Program, the Wood Bison Breeding Program and most recently, the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program.

In Canada, many of our species have been brought close to extinction because of logging, mining and oil exploration, and urban development. All have played a role in eradicating the natural habitats of these animals. For example, at the last count, there were just 90 Vancouver Island Marmots in the wild. Today we have 172 in captive breeding across 3 locations.

Since 2000, Mountain View has been an active participant in the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Project along with provincial and federal government agencies and other zoos and breeding facilities. Our marmot breeding facility is state-of-the-art and has become the model for other breeding centres across the country. Learn More

The Oregon Spotted Frog Project continues to expand year after year. Our breeding success has resulted in increased demand for frogs from our centre. We began with 3 breeding pools and now have over 20 breeding pools at the centre specifically for the spotted frogs. Learn More

The Northern Spotted Owl Project is our newest program. Mountain View has been selected to participate in the captive breeding program for this highly endangered bird. The Northern Spotted Owl population has dropped to less than 30 known in the wild. We took delivery of our first male in July 2007 and expect to have 9 pairs in the breeding program within the next 6 months. A private breeding facility and flyway are under construction and will be finished by late fall 2007. It will take several years before we have owls ready for release back to the wild. Mountain View is very proud to be the custodians of these magnificent birds. Updates of our program will appear regularly on our site. Learn More

Wood bison are the other Canadian species in our care. We have a small herd that is breeding successfully at the centre. In addition to the bison, there a number of native fish, birds, insects and animals that reside and breed on our property in Langley.
