Saving the "precious" Oregon Spotted Frog
The Oregon Spotted Frog, whose scientific name, Ranapretiosa, means precious frog, is possibly the most endangered amphibian in Canada. Historically it lived in southwestern B.C. and along the coastal area of Washington and Oregon.
The reasons for its rarity include the draining of wetland habitat for development and the introduction of the American bullfrog, a much larger species whose prey also includes smaller frogs like the Oregon Spotted Frog. The bullfrog is capable of eradicating smaller frog species from individual ponds. The entire Canadian wild population of Oregon Spotted Frogs is currently confined to three ponds in BC: Seabird Island, Aldergrove Military base and a private farm in Chilliwack.
Since 2003, we have reintroduced thousands of Oregon Spotted Frogs into the wild and populations are growing. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RECOVERY PROGRAM
